Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Shane, and I find it comical when people write about themselves in the third person in their “About Me” section of their websites. You know, the, “<First Name> <Last name> is a…” When reading those, the narrator in my head switches to that deep, low, drawn-out voice that you hear in blockbuster movie trailers. I will not be doing that; instead, I’ll tell you what I love most about being a user experience designer. I love how it has challenged and transformed my way of thinking. My mantra is, “Just because something is the way it is, doesn’t mean it has to or should be.” Every day, through every interaction, design offers me an outlet to constantly learn as well as teach, to see life experiences from many different perspectives, and ultimately understand the motivations people have when they are trying to achieve their goals.
Throughout my career, I’ve honed my skills while working at small studios, large design agencies, digital consulting firms, and in-house design teams at product companies. Through these experiences I’ve been able to explore many sides of the design and product processes.
I relish collaborative environments that encourage everyone to participate, voice their opinions, teach, and learn. To me, this keeps both life and work interesting and fun, and it fuels the passion to do amazing work. My three favorite activities of the design process are:
Solving complex puzzles through design and prototyping
Conducting user testing to vet designs and uncover valuable insights on how to improve solutions
Working with developers to ensure the design vision is carried through to development, delivery and launch
In my spare time I enjoy going to small venue concerts, viewing major sporting events, researching random topics that pique my interest, daydreaming on what breed I would get if I ever pulled the trigger on getting a dog, explaining to people why I love clowns, and providing quick-witted comic relief whenever possible.
